Scheduling Your Test - Detailed Description

Brief Overview

In January 2020,the FAA changed the way that knowledge tests are administered. In this guide, we’ll walk through the new test taking process.

First, it’s important that you meet all of the prerequisites for the Remote Pilot Certificate. You must be at least 16 years old, pass a TSA security check, and be able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language. The FAA will perform the TSA security check for you behind the scenes, and there is no additional charge for this process.

You’ll be taking a 60 question, multiple choice test on a computer, and you are allowed two hours to complete it. The minimum passing score is 70 percent. If you fail the test, you must wait 14 days before you can make another attempt, and you’ll need to pay the testing center fee again. Test centers typically charge around $150 to administer the test.

Obtain an FTN Number

The first step in scheduling your test is to obtain an FTN number, or which is the number that the FAA will use to track your application. To apply for your FTN, you will use the Integrated Airman Certification and Rating Application, lovingly known in the industry as IACRA. You can find this at iacra.faa.gov, or use the link below. Go ahead and create your account online, and your new FTN will be displayed.

If you already have an FTN from a previous application, you should skip this step and use the FTN that you already have.

Schedule Your Test

Once you have your FTN, you can find your closest testing center and schedule your test online through the PSI website. You’ll have to create a new account on this site - it is different from the account you set up for the IACRA. After you’ve created your account, the application will guide you through the process of scheduling your test.

The name of the test you want to take is the Unmanned Aircraft General, or UAG.

Take Your Test

On your scheduled test day, you’ll need to bring a government-issued photo ID and pay the test center fee, which is typically around $150. After your test, the supervisor will give you an Exam Report, which will have your score and an Exam ID.

Take this Exam Report and log back into the IACRA website. Follow the instructions to start a new application. The website will guide you through the process. When it asks for your Exam ID, enter the number that’s printed on your Exam Report. Then go ahead and submit your application.

What Next?

Within a day or so, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to print your temporary certificate. Congratulations! You are not an FAA certified pilot and you can go fly! Then, the FAA will perform its TSA background check, and if that check passes, you will receive your permanent pilot certificate in 6-8 weeks.
